Some European economies are, or have recently been, reforming their labour markets to try to put in place a “flexicurity” model. Indeed, there is a strong demand for further flexibilisation of labour markets, employment and the work organization to adjust to globalization and the competition from other regions. But at same time, an equally strong demand exists for providing security to employees – and to vulnerable groups – and for preserving social cohesion which is the trademark of the European social model.

This event discussed the potential of the flexicurity model as employment strategy and the way it could be implemented in European countries to be successful.

This event represents the first in a collaborative series between Bruegel and (UK), exploring the social dimensions and economic consequences of European labour market transformation. The series brings together both organisations' distinct perspectives on these issues, balancing Bruegel's macro- and microeconomic rigour with Demos' unique insights into the lived experiences of social and economic change.
