Free trade agreements for the 21st century
See blog post 'The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Initiative: Hope or Hype?'
Bruegel Senior Fellow André Sapir looks at the risks and benefits of a free trade agreement between the US and the European Union. While recognising that merely removing trade barriers would have limited benefits for both economies, Sapir brings the idea of common regulation to the debate, thinking of a scenario that could result in a transatlantic single market.
Speaking of China and the role of other emerging countries in these trade agreements, Sapir emphasises the need to avoid EU-US alliances that would be perceived as agreements to maintain the status of dominant powers.
