Solange Chatelard

Former student of the London School of Economics, Solange Guo Chatelard is a PhD student in Comparative Politics at Sciences Po and associate researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Anthropology in Germany. She is currently based in Brussels where she is a scientific associate at the Laboratoire d’anthropologie des mondes contemporains of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Her work focuses on the historicity of the state and the question of "modernity" in China today from two terrains: the transformations of rural China and the activity of Chinese overseas in Africa. Her dissertation project is an ethnography of Chinese first arrivals in Zambia from the 1990s to today based on five years of fieldwork in Zambia and China. Solange also produced two films that discuss the intensification of the Chinese presence in Africa: When China Met Africa (BBC, 2011), and King Cobra and the Dragon (AL JAZEERA, 2012).
