Kemal Dervis
Vice-President and Director of Global Economy and Development, Brookings,
Kemal DerviÅŸ is Vice President for Global Economics and Development at the Brookings Institution, Washington, DC. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Istanbul Policy Center at Sabanci University and Chairman of the International Advisory Board of Akbank. He was Executive Head of the UNDP, member of the Turkish Parliament, and Minister for Economic Affairs and the Treasury of the Republic of Turkey, responsible for Turkey's recovery programme after the devastating financial crisis that hit the country in February 2001.
Dr. Derviş earned his Bachelor’s (First Class Honours) and Master’s Degrees (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics, and his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University. He has published several books and many articles in academic journals as well as current affairs publications, in English, Turkish, French and German, on topics ranging from mathematical models of economic growth to macro-economic policy, social mobility and income distribution, international trade, European enlargement, global governance and climate change. Recent books include Inequality in America: Facts, Trends, and International Perspectives (2012) co-written with Uri Dadush and others, and A Better Globalization: Legitimacy, Governance and Reform (2005), both published by the Brookings Press. Two new books, Europe’s Crisis, Europe’s Future (2014) co-edited with Jacques Mistral and G20 at Five: Time for Strategic Leadership (2014) co-edited with Peter Drysdale, have been published in 2014. Kemal Derviş has a monthly column published in many languages in newspapers around the world by Project Syndicate.
