Everton Vargas

Ambassador of Brazil to the EU,

Everton Vieira Vargas is the Ambassador of Brazil to the European Union (since September 2016). Prior to the current position, he was the Ambassador of Brazil to Argentina (2013-2016) and Germany (2009-2013).

His positions in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs include Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs (2007-2009), Special Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Secretary-General of the Ministry (2005-2007), Director-General of the Department for Environment and Special Affairs (2001-2005) head of the Environment Division (1998-2001) and of the Division for Science and Technology (1987-88).

He has been posted to the Embassy of Brazil in Bonn (1981-85), to the Mission of Brazil to the UN in New York (1988-1992), and to the Embassy in Tokyo (1992-1995).

He is the author of several articles on environment and sustainable development, on sociology and on international law. He was a Professor of Diplomatic Language at the Instituto Rio Branco between 2002 and 2007.

He was born in Santo Ângelo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1955. He graduated from the Instituto Rio Branco (the Brazilian diplomatic academy) in 1976. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree (AEUDF, 1976), a Master of Arts in International Relations (Boston University, 1983) and a Doctorate in Sociology, with honors (Universidade de Brasília, 2001). His doctoral thesis has been published in Portuguese and Spanish under the title O Legado do Discurso (Brasília: FUNAG, 2006)/ El Legado del Discurso (Buenos Aires: Editorialo Biblos, 2015).

He speaks Portuguese, English, French, German and Spanish.
