The European Central Bank is in the process of considering whether to issue a . The digital euro would still be a euro, like banknotes but digital – an electronic form of central bank money accessible to all citizens and firms. While a digital euro would combine the efficiency of a digital payment instrument with the safety of central bank money, some concerns have been raised about its potential impact on the financial system.
Fabio Panetta, Member of the ECB’s Executive Board and Chair of the Eurosystem task force on a digital euro, will focus on the potential effects of issuing a digital euro on financial intermediation, financial stability and the international financial system and consider some key design principles to mitigate unwarranted implications.
